パソコン時代の終焉とスティーブ・ジョブス

日経新聞2011年8月20日朝刊の記事に「パソコン主役の座　交代、最大手ＨＰ、事業分離へ。　スマートフォン・タブレット台頭で。　ＩＴ業界、勢力激変」の記事が載っていた。

現役時代にパソコン事業に携わっていた私にとって感慨深い内容だった。　世界パソコン販売シェアトップのＨＰが、まだシェアトップだのにパソコン事業を早くも見切りをつけた変わり身の早さに、さすがに米国企業だと感心する。

パソコンを主役の座から引きずり降ろしたのがスマートフォン（スマホ）で、10年10～12月期にはスマホの世界出荷台数がパソコンの出荷台数を上回った。　スマホが世界中でこんなに急激に伸びてきたとは驚きだ。　その私も商売の必要上から１年以上前に携帯をスマホに切り替えたが十分に使いこなせていない。　私には日本ではまだパソコン中心でスマホが主役に躍り出たという実感がなかった。（私の周囲だけか？私が時代遅れなのか？）

それにしても、IBM－PCが1981年に発売（日本では1982年にNECがPC－9801を発売）されてから30年、Windows95が1995年にリリースされインターネット接続が一般化してから16年、携帯の本格普及が始まってから10年余り、その技術革新とネット進化の早さに驚くばかり。　今は携帯を当たり前のように使っているがまだ一般化して10年しか経っていないのだ。　

凡人エンジニアだった私には、手のひらに乗る小さなボディにフルＰＣの機能が全て入り有線ＬＡＮを凌駕するスピードで無線（Wi-Hi⇒WiMax)でつながるモバイル端末（スマホ）がこんなに早くできるなんて想像もできなかった。

そのスマホを世に出したスティーブ・ジョブスのアップルは株式の時価総額がエクソンモービルを抜き、世界トップになったというから、あのＩＴ業界の雄：ＩＢＭ、マイクロソフト、INTELやGoogleも一気に抜き去ったのだから、これも驚きだ。　

この立役者がスティーブ・ジョブスだ。　一時倒産しかかっていたアップルがスティーブ・ジョブスのＣＥＯ復帰のお陰で、iPod、AppleStore、iPhone、iPad、と一連のヒットで、パソコンの終焉を早くし世の中を変えてしまった。

改めて、スティーブ・ジョブスとはどんな人物なのか気になった。ネット検索で調べた「スティーブ・ジョブスとは？」のリンクを記録しておきます。

2005年、スタンフォード大学^[6]の卒業式に招かれた。そのスピーチは、多くの共感を持って迎えられ「Stay hungry, stay foolish.」という、結びの言葉で締めくくられた。

INTEL創始者のアンディ・グローブが「パラノイア（偏執狂）だけが生き残る」という本を出していたのを思い出した。スティーブ・ジョブスは好きなことを追求し続ける偏執狂だっただけでなく、権力闘争も繰り返している。自分が作ったAppleから一度は追い出されたが、Appleに復帰する画策や復帰後は意見が合わない取締役を追い出しワンマン体制を取り返し、iPod以降のヒットを連発している。　生まれた家庭環境（養子に出された）にもその遠因がありそうだ。

先日、レンタルＤＶＤで見た「ソーシャルネットワーク」のSNSサイトのFacebookを創設したマーク・ザッカーバーグ　も同じようなパラノイアの匂いを感じる。

国債が格下げされドル離れが起きているアメリカだが、ＩＴの世界ではこのような人物や企業を排出するアメリカが依然リードしており、とても敵わない。　日経の記事に、「国内勢、戦略見直し必要。　消耗戦一段と加速」とあったが、日本電機大手はガラパゴス携帯で国内で過当競争している間に、スマートフォンにも出遅れた。　やはり日本市場優先で日本語文化のままではグローバルトップにはなれないのだろうか？　先日、ＮＥＣがパソコン事業をレノボと統合した（実質切り離しした）が、携帯事業も含め更なる再編が進みそうだ。

＜追記＞この記事を書いた1.5ヶ月後の10月5日に、スティーブ・ジョブス逝去の報が流れた。56才の若さだった。各界からジョブス氏の死を悼む声が相次いだ。オバマ米大統領も「地球上で最も成功した企業を自宅のガレージから起こして米国の創造的精神を見せつけ、人類史上まれな功績を成し遂げた。」と評した。彼の死の前日に発表され、酷評を受けたアップルのｉＰｈｏｎｅ後続作「ｉＰｈｏｎｅ４Ｓ」が、スティーブ・ジョブズの死で状況を一変させ、彼の遺作として大ヒットしている。
