最後のＤＯＳマシン＝最安値ＰＣ−９８０１
「黒船コンパック」対抗の初代９８ＦＥＬＬＯＷを超速開発し標準価格２１．８万円で９３年1月にリリース後、直ちに同じ年の11月に第２世代９８ＦＥＬＬＯＷ（ＰＣ−９８０１ＢＸ２）をマザーボードの海外生産などのコスト低減の努力をして１７．８万円と値下げしました。 
さらに、インパクトのある価格でＤＯＳ／Ｖ勢との競合を勝ち抜くために、新たに標準価格で遂に１０万円を切る破格値９．８万（店頭実売価格では７万円強）の第３世代９８ＦＥＬＬＯＷ（ＰＣ−９８０１ＢＸ３）の計画が浮上しました。
この第３世代機が「低価格宣言。９８ＦＥＬＬＯＷ」の謳い文句で９５年１月に発売されました。（添付カタログ参照）
これが結果的に、ＰＣ９８シリーズの中で、標準価格が１０万円を切ったモデルはこれが最初（で最後）であり、また、数多あるＰＣ−９８０１−ＸＸシリーズの歴史の中で「９８０１」型番を付した、「ＤＯＳマシンの最後の機種」となりました。
つまり、一時代を画したＰＣ−９８０１型番シリーズの「トリ」を務めた９８ＦＥＬＬＯＷが皮肉にもＰＣ９８シリーズ中の最安値のパソコンとなりました。

上掲のように、９３年５月のWindows3.1の発売から1年を経過して、９４年後半〜９５年前半は、Windowsの使い勝手の改善やＷｉｎｄｏｗｓ対応のソフト（ワープロ、表計算、ネットワーク接続など）の充実により、Ｗｉｎｄｏｗｓが仕事に使える実用的なものとして認知され、それまでの主力であった「ＤＯＳパソコン」から「Ｗｉｎｄｏｗｓパソコン」への大きな流れが加速してきた時代でした。

One of the latter, nevertheless ? the younger ? betrayed a disposition to intercept some stray item of this interchange and see what it would lead to; but his companion observed pertinently enough that he had better be careful. They mustn’t begin by making mistakes.
